Pumpkin Mania Time- Experimenting with Pumpkins!

Students had the opportunity during October to dive deeper into the pumpkins.  They each brought in a pumpkin, made estimates of seeds, and ultimately counted all seeds in the pumpkin.  The question was whether or not the size of a pumpkin had an impact on the amount of seeds the pumpkin produced.  Well, we learned that the bigger pumpkin doesn't necessarily have the most seeds.  Our results included evidence from the circumference of our pumpkin, size of stem, weight in kilograms (this is science after all), and number of seeds.  They had so much fun diving into that stinky pumpkin pulp!

SOL 4.1- Scientific Investigations using Marshmallow Shooters!

As part of our introductory unit on SOL 4.1 scientific investigations, the students got to experiment with the distance a marshmallow will go given certain conditions.  They had their experiment sheets ready, several size tubes, large marshmallows, and some flour.  First they tested the marshmallows close to their mouth in the tube, then farther away.  Each time they would lightly roll the marshmallow in flour to give it some extra leverage.  They had so much fun measuring, and testing their hypothesis out!

Inferencing- Case of the Missing Moo Moo!

As part of our unit on Inferencing, the students experienced a crime scene investigation.  We made a mess, taped off the door, and had them play detectives!  Someone stole Moo Moo and we had to figure out who would do such a thing.  The children worked together in small groups to analyze the crime scene looking for clues/evidence, and then writing their inferences based on the clues.  I guess the left over Pokémon card gave away that it was probably my son Hayden! :)  We sat in small groups and wrote a story about what happened based on the evidence that we had.

Welcome Mr. Waffles- Our new class pet!

Welcome our new class pet! Mr. Waffles.  After 3 1/2 years our class gerbil passed away about a week ago.  I decided since I had such a lovely class, that I would let them name the new pet.  With all those creative kiddos, they finally settled on the name Waffles.  I think that it fits him perfectly! Welcome to our family Mr. Waffles!
