McDonalds Project: How many Calories would you eat in a Day? Add/Subtract Project

Look at the following menu from McDonalds.  Your job is to pick a breakfast, lunch, and dinner option from the menu and calculate how many calories you have consumed in that day.  When you are done, and have completely totaled up your items, you will then write about whether or not your choices are healthy.

Science Is So Much Fun: Fun with the Elementary Science Institute at Graves Mountain Lodge in the Blue Ridge

Our Cohort had a blast at Graves Mountain Lodge in the Blue Ridge Region of Virginia! The food was awesome, and the team bonding was great.  We learned so much about hands on Science Instruction.  Can't wait for the next outing to Hungry Mother State Park.

**Kind of bummed that I didn't get to see any black bears**

Pumpkin Mania- What a fun way to celebrate in the classroom and have some measurement fun!

Students worked together on the Friday before Halloween.  Each child brought in a pumpkin o donate to the class for us to dissect.  The students received a recording sheet for pumpkin mania.  The had to first make a hypothesis about what pumpkin would have the most seeds and why?  I pre-cut all pumpkin tops beforehand to save on time.  The students worked in pairs to remove the "guts" from the pumpkins and collect/count all seeds in the pumpkins and record it.  They had to weigh their pumpkins and measure the circumference of their pumpkin.  All data was recorded and they even made graphs for how many seeds they thought there were vs. how many their actually were.  We all shared our results afterwards.
The parent support was AWESOME!!!

After the children were done, they cleaned up, and handed all seed bags to me.  I went home that weekend and made apple cider and roasted pumpkin seeds to bring to class for the kids. What a fun time!
